– Founder & Head of Organizing Committee: Ahmad Zohadi
Purpose:
The 11th edition of the 2A Africa Architecture Awards as a part of 2A Continental Architectural Awards continues its mission to recognize and celebrate outstanding achievements in architecture, interior design, and urban design across the continent of Africa.
With the theme of “Innovative Contextual Architecture,” the Awards focus on honoring projects and professionals who have creatively addressed the contemporary challenges of architecture within the cultural, social, and environmental contexts of their regions.
The 2A Africa Architecture Awards’ event highlights global design excellence through:
- Prestigious awards
- Engaging exhibitions
- In-depth debates and discussions on architectural methods and cultural influences
- It brings together architects, urban designers, scholars, and industry leaders to explore diverse perspectives, emerging trends, and innovative design strategies shaped by local identity and global insight.
Vision:
Africa—the oldest landmass on Earth and the cradle of humanity—bears a deep and complex history, marked by both triumph and adversity. While narratives often portray Africa as a continent in constant need of external aid, this perspective overlooks its enduring strength, resilience, and profound cultural richness. Like a river carving its path through solid rock, Africa continues to persevere—resisting external exploitation, overcoming immense challenges, and remaining steadfastly connected to its roots.
Architecture, as a tangible reflection of a society’s history and values, is no exception. African architecture is a testament to the continent’s deep cultural identity, resourcefulness, and intrinsic relationship with nature. Its architectural diversity—from the monumental legacies of ancient Egypt and Ethiopia to the grounded, nature-integrated structures of southern Africa—showcases a profound capacity for contextual design and ecological harmony.
Many architectural theorists regard Africa as a pioneer in contextual and eco-conscious design, both historically and in contemporary practice. While imported architectural styles and materials have influenced African cities during various periods, a renewed emphasis is now placed on re-centering African identity in architecture. This involves integrating local traditions, materials, and environmental awareness to create structures that are both modern and deeply rooted in place.
A core strategy embraced by many African architects today is the use of locally sourced, “home-grown” materials to promote sustainability and cultural continuity. African architecture is inherently diverse—served as a crossroads of Eastern and Western cultural influences in the North, and as an embodiment of natural symbiosis in the South. This diversity offers a rich foundation for innovation, grounded in tradition.
Key Challenges and Opportunities in African Architecture:
- Post-Colonial Recovery and Identity Reclamation
The legacy of colonialism and imperialism continues to shape the built environment in many African countries. Contemporary African architecture must actively respond to this history—acknowledging the impact while envisioning a future that revitalizes indigenous values, aesthetics, and spatial practices. - Communal Living and Social Fabric
African societies often prioritize the collective over the individual—a worldview that contrasts with many Western paradigms. This communal ethos should inform architectural design, ensuring that spaces foster social cohesion and reflect shared cultural values. - Eco-Design and Climate Responsiveness
Long before the global sustainability movement, African architecture demonstrated a deep understanding of the natural environment. Structures were designed in harmony with local climates, using natural ventilation, earth-based materials, and shading techniques. Today, this legacy continues to inspire environmentally responsible design across the continent. - Cultural Relevance and Public Engagement
Architecture must resonate with the people it serves. When African architects return from international study, it is essential they adapt their knowledge to local contexts. Simply replicating foreign architectural styles—such as Bauhaus—without cultural adaptation risks alienation. Architecture must speak to its community, reflect its identity, and invite public acceptance through vernacular sensitivity.
2A’s Vision for the Africa Architecture Award is to honor and highlight architectural practices that respect Africa’s rich heritage while addressing the needs of a dynamic and rapidly evolving society. The award celebrates innovation that is contextually grounded, environmentally responsible, and socially meaningful—architecture that not only serves but uplifts the communities it inhabits.

This theme reflects the Awards’ broader commitment to honoring architectural excellence that resonates on both local and global scales, influencing the built environment in meaningful and lasting ways.
